Cumbria is a long way but......

Post by fb.george » Sun Nov 18, 2012 4:49 pm

It's a great place to spend time.

Thought I would float this out there to see if there is an appetite for a few days trip to Cumbria.

I have in mind a base in Kendal. Two full days out exploring the best roads the county has to offer. One in the East, taking in Hartside Moor cafe. One in the West, taking in more traditional "Lakeland" scenery.

Realistically, from anywhere South of Watford Gap, this is a 3 night trip.
Day 1 - to get to Kendal. This can be interesting itself, with Wales, the Trough of Bowland or the Yorkshire Dales in the way
Day 2 - road trip. 200 or so miles punctuated by coffee / lunch stops. Circular route from Kendal
Day 3 - ditto
Day 4 - wander off home.

Of course it would be great if some Northern Atoms could join the day trips. Am sure any permutation of trip length could be accommodated. I have a hotel in mind but have not approached them yet. There are plenty around Kendal though so don't think the hotel will be a problem.

In my 10 years of living here, April and May seem the driest months but I guess anytime between April and September to fit with other events would work.

I can vouch for the worth of the roads up here. They have been my playground, They are fabulous and I would love to share them with fellow Atomites. That said, as it says in the title, it is a long way.

So let me know if there is interest and we can gauge whether this is a runner

All the best

Mark

There are some super roads around there. Lots of very bumpy ones also that are not too good with the stif Atom shocks. I have wanted to do the Kirkstone pass for many years but did it in my Caterham. Very bumpy in such a car

MG ZT-T V8, Smart ForTwo...
Oh yeah and the day job involves 2x 2250bhp V16 quad-turbo MTU diesels! :)

All
after Tom's plug at the xmas do, i thought i had better get on and put some substance to this event.

having looked at the likely events next year they seem to be
February - Spanish track day
19 May - car show
Early June - Spa trip
22 June - Le Mans
Mid July? - Isle of Wight trip
End July / Early August - Ireland trip

Also Wales which was July and France which was September have been mentioned as re runs. There are also the Atom Cup races to consider, although dates are not out yet I don't think.

So, how does an early season event sound to everyone. The first May bank holiday, 3rd to 6th May, has a good feel to it, with the extra day. Make your way to Kendal on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday - 2 days out exploring. Trip home on the Monday.

For those who have expressed interest, or those who might fancy it, would this date work? If so I shall crack on and sort a hotel.

Thoughts?

All the best

Best thing to do is get a stake in the ground and claim your dates now!

Thanks Ben
spoken like a seasoned pro. Good to meet you last evening.

I am assuming the extra day of the bank holiday helps out. Weather has been good in May up here. So I shall go for the 3rd, 4th and 5th May and make enquiries of hotels in Kendal and update when i have something concrete.

then we can firm up numbers

Thanks
Keep smiling!!
