When is a 3.5R not a 3.5R?
When is a 3.5R not a 3.5R?
This dealer is claiming that this 2012 3.5 has the 3.5R 350bhp upgrade kit, and so is asking £55k. It also claims it's done 7300 miles, despite the dash clearly showing 9150.

Re: When is a 3.5R not a 3.5R?
Ariel did some installations of the oil cooler etc not in pods but I can't see anything additional on the pics (but admittedly being no expert.)
The wings are non-Ariel and I certainly don't think that it's anything close to a full 3.5R.
It has Bilsteins which are fine but no ohlins.
It's a standard supercharged Atom surely?
Cheers,
Stu

Re: When is a 3.5R not a 3.5R?
This is clearly just a standard 3.5. It may well have been remapped to produce 350hp. But without any charge cooling it will never make 350hp consistently. Ariel didn't add the pods for their ability to collect stone chips.
The mileage error is inexcusable. The rest just sounds like they have no clue what it is they are selling.

Re: When is a 3.5R not a 3.5R?
On another note, what does it take to get a 3.5 up to a nice healthy 350bhp??
Re: When is a 3.5R not a 3.5R?
A bigger engine oh and a lot of money
A 2.4 block k20 head gives around 350 bhp 8300 rpm supercharger temperature is the main problem cool the charge air down more power but also more money
Can’t take it with you so it might as well go on with the quest
With a Charge Cooler 360-370 bhp

Re: When is a 3.5R not a 3.5R?
Methanol injection would add some extra fueling and significantly reduce intake temperatures. Fairly cheap to do as well.
I run it on my 996 turbo it significantly decreases my intake temps and allow me to run more boost and timing. At part throttle the intake temps can dip below the ambient air temps.
Never heard of anyone running it on an atom though…

Re: When is a 3.5R not a 3.5R?
Sorry I had a few years without an atom, so I have a bit of forum catching up to do! I'm back now though...
Very interesting read there Ian, have to say Meth made a huge difference on my 996. I did buy an AEM kit originally but never fitted it. I ended up going with an aquamist kit which takes its signal from an injector. The AEM kit triggers from boost pressure. The aquamist system is a lot more precise by comparison. Whether that is a factor or the difference is down to being a completely different engine setup, supercharged VS turbocharged etc...

Re: When is a 3.5R not a 3.5R?
Yep if the factory can't vouch for it, then its another atom with a power hike that may not have been done properly.
CPL racing do a better version than the Jackson equivalent but its no cheaper than the factory upgrade (at least when I got the quote). This gets you upto 360-370
If I'm buying or upgrading to 3.5R, I'd want it done by the factory so I wouldn't lose on the re-sale.

So good to be back Ian! I found your build thread last night. What a journey!

Not to bad
new updates coming this week will restart it as soon as.

Re: When is a 3.5R not a 3.5R?
I spoke with TDI north yesterday and asked about power upgrades and confirmed that really best option was to swap charger for a turbo then a comfortable 400bhp.
But I think that’s maybe a little too much especially as it will inherit the boost type power delivery and loose the whole character and sound of the supercharged K20.
Tho I must say I’d love to try it

Re: When is a 3.5R not a 3.5R?
Looks like someone on the Facebook group has shown up saying that they have bought this car convinced it is a 3.5R...
