Front suspension issue: uneven grip

Post by Loco_Mario_PL » Mon Sep 02, 2013 9:50 am

I recently had MOT test done. To my surprise, there are differences in my front suspension:

LEFT side: grip 66%, 13 Hz frequency,

RIGHT side: 78%, 11 Hz frequency.

(left and right sides from the position of a driver, of course)

Rear seems ok, RIGHT and LEFT sides: 74%, frequency 13 Hz.

We repeated the test with different shock absorber settings (soft vs hard). Results even worse.

Why is the diffrence in front suspension ?

I measured the coil springs lenght and found differences (picture). Also, the length of coils vary.

This has been a factory setting, I haven't fiddled with the coils so far.

Any thoughts on that ?

(excuse me if my English terms are not the exact as they should be)

Might be that it's been corner weighted to allow for the weight of the driver...

See here for an explanation: http://robrobinette.com/corner_weight.htm (other explanations are available)

Did you check with and without a driver?

Was your car a UK car / ambi chassis car so may be set up for a driver sitting on the right side of the car?

Mine is set up like this, as it's RHD I've always assumed out of the factory they allow for the driver.

hmmm I'd expect the preloads to be the same on the springs and the pushrods used to balance - but I'm no expert
