Project Mudflap

Post by Karl V » Fri Jul 20, 2018 11:58 am

Another little project that I had been planning while climbing the waiting list, was a set of mud flaps.

I had read a few forum posts about how mud and rain gets sprayed into the cabin when turning the front wheels and was inspired by early launch / testing footage showing a Nomad tearing it up through a dirt track with… mudflaps.

I grabbed some black 4mm generic rally style flaps (https://www.jjcraceandrally.com/autogra ... ec-car-set) and set about looking how to attach them to the mud guards.

I quickly realised that having fairly heavy mud flaps (plus the drag they create at speed) would cause issues at the front, where the mud guards are much more ‘flexible’ (the rears have an extra internal brace underneath to stiffen them up). The design of the mud guards and mounting brackets for front and rear are identical, except for the extra braces at the rear, so I grabbed 4 of the braces from Ariel (2 for each front wheel) which gave the rigidity needed to hang a bit of extra weight.

Next up was to mark out the mounting holes. I wanted to follow the existing V shape of the mud guards to five a bit more stiffness to stop the flaps flying horizontal at speed. So measured and marked the holes, using metal fixing brackets underneath.

At the rear, I worked around the existing hole for the rear reflector.

They seem to do the job and don’t hit the tub at full lock. At 60 Mph, only the last 2 or 3 inches of the 16-inch flap bends out to about 30 degrees or so, so I’m pleased that the shaping of them has created the extra vertical stiffness. If I get bored with them, I am thinking I can just remove them and keep the bolts in, or even grab 4 new mud guards from Ariel if really necessary.

So that’s it really. Kept me busy for a couple of days and hopefully doesn’t look too bad. Onto project ‘rain hat’ next…

Appreciate what you've done there- I have similar plans - just looking for the right type of flaps presently - and thanks for posting ;)

A7DUO, did you find your desired flaps yet?? https://www.plastics4performance.com/mu ... erial.html

I've been looking at these in red to match my bonnet and rear deck

I've also found material in 3mm thickness which should be lighter than the stuff i posted above but i'm concerned it'll deflect too much at higher speeds.
