lightweight portable tools to carry....

Post by A7DUO » Thu Jan 09, 2020 9:10 am

I have found a nice LoweAlpine camera bag that fits the storage are in the front of the Nomad a treat.

What I would like to find now are some handy tools that fit in this. As my car carries a spare wheel/tyre, it has dawned on me I should carry a small jack and 19mm nut spanner.

I started looking at bottle jacks but they a bit heavy and rated a bit higher than I need to lift the Ariel, I found a smallish scissor jack like this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/compact-qualit ... B071KVNJT7 but its proabably too big to fit my 'camera bag' up front, although a small bottle jack might.

I would be interested to see what people carrry, and I've stowed a new can of tyre weld up front for now, until I sort out a pouch of handy tools.

I would probably use it to store my RAC membership card. Should be room.

Breakdown card is a good shout ;-)

Thanks Karl and Alan.... I should have know Karl has already given this little space quite a bit of thought :) well done and thanks, I am inspired now at the weekend to fill the little camera bag I have in this alcove with the other half of this list I hadn't thought of yet :) and yes, I have laminated my recovery service card. The hunt for a suitable jack continues, but if I get the front winch fitted when the Nomad goes in for its first service around April - then that will help with wheel changes in certain situations. I quite like the off-road recovery jack fitted as an option to the American Nomads - but its more than I need really to to buy/clean/& carry - but can look good and I will consider one in future (once I've fitted the raised air intake to complete the purposeful off-road themed look).

Have you considered zip tying a bottle jack to the spare wheel mount?

I've currently ziptied the actual wheel brace to the inside of the spare wheel, and if I didn't have the highlift, I'd be looking at doing the above.

Will a bottle jack give the height needed to lift those long dampers off the ground?

Something like this (not too expensive at ~55 quid) should lift 60cm... so more than enough:

pop on to the Halfords website and they do a puck kind of thing that fits the top of your jack so you don't damage your paintwork.

I bought this lot from Fuelfriends (German Manufacturer) - I've used them on bike expeditions and I like they way you can strap them down, and 5 of them fit behind the footrest on the passenger side in the Nomad to carry things like reserve fuel, octane boost, oil, coolant, washer fluid on expeditions - so you are never hunting around for the right additive when you need it out on expeditions https://photos.app.goo.gl/ppJzPkRcpSha87te6

several sizes with the 1L and 1,5L having a handy eyelet for strapping them down securely - simple but effective.
