Turbocharge my AA2 Uk.

Post by Fredrik F » Sat Mar 05, 2011 8:28 pm

Now it's time for more horsepower. 245 hp is not enough any more, now I am about to turbo charge my Ariel Atom 2 uk.

I will post everything I possibly can here.

Right now we have just removed rollbar, bodyparts & the exhaust and have just ordered the parts for the turbo.

Here is the first photo. I have numbered each of the various components to be placed. (photo is of poor quality, I hope you can see)

# 1 Turbo (capable of 500HP)
# 2 New exhaust
# 3 Intercooler (In front of left rear wheel)
# 4 oil cooler (in front of right rear wheel)

I have not decided yet but I think it will be 300hp and 400hp options with a switcher in front of the driver.

Sorry if it take some time.

But we are still waiting for some parts. But we have rearranged some of the location of the new parts.

The turbo will be centered behind the engine block.
The intercooler will be located in the same place as the old exhaust.
The new exhaust will unfortunately end up below the registration plate. But it will probably be the best way.

If you have any good ideas so you are welcome to present them here.

I have turbo'd an Atom 3, a few warning.....
After 1st installing the turbo, we encountered a few problems and ended up re installing a 2nd time to get rid of the issues.

make sure the turbo is not to close to the oil temperature and oil pressure sensor, the heat from the turbo gave false temperature reading for the engine oil.
we put the oil cooler tucked in front of the right rear wheel - by the time it was out of the way of stones that are thrown up, it did not get much airflow. we ended up moving it close to the dry sump tank in-front of the passenger foot well.

on the dyno it pulled 326kw, 431nm of torque on 1 bar of boost.

2 pictures, one general layout from rear, 2nd you see the turbo and a 3rd close up.

Interested in your anti roll bar set up.  Does it make much difference?

I have a rear one as well, and together they work well.
Unfortunately I have never driven the car with and  without the roll bars on the same tyres in the same conditions though, so I don't know what it means lap time wise.
The rear role bar is still a prototype.

I like what you have done for the rear roll bar.  There just isn't a lot of mounting choices.  Have you done a front one?

That rear is neat.  Well done.  Can you get any adjustability in it?

Nice job you have done.  :tu:

I had intended to place most of the parts in the same way as you.
But the turbo is placed higher up in front of (inside) the intercooler. I will also place the exhaust outside of the chassis. I'd probably like to have the exhaust on the inside of the chassis that you have. It looks best and also I actually meant to put the anti-roll bar in the same way as you have done. Nice to see that "the real".  :)

Do you have Honda or GM engine?

Norm - The front roll bar brackets are those 2 metal pieces sticking up in front of the aero screens!

16" all around, 12" rear and 10" front.
You need the gripe with the power in the rear.

yes, there are 3 attachment points on the arm that runs forward so you can change the amount of leverage it has.
