Repowering an Atom I

Post by ferret » Wed May 17, 2006 12:06 pm

Is it possible to buy A 220 HP Honda Integra R Motor from a wrecker and use it in a 2001 Atom 1 to gain higher horse power over the Rover Motor?
Are the chassis of both cars the same?
Can it be done?
What extra parts would need to be replaced to do the transplant like axels etc.
Any thoughts?
I have been told that it would not fit!!

Will not fit without chassis modification.  It has been done in one case.

I suspect the expense will mean it is not worth doing, you would certainly be at Atom 2 160 money by the time you had finished.

You could tune the Rover unit to give approaching 200bhp but not so sure about reliability at that level, rumour is they don't last so long in VHPD tune crates

Yep - ditto.

Requires a lot more work than would be viable really.  Plus you'd need to find a spare mark 1 anyhow!

Is that an out of date ad or has it changed owners very quickly ?

Assuming it is this car

then someone did at the time and for a much lower price than the PH one.  No wonder you car dealers are all driving round in supercars  ;)

It looks like that car to me. But that was a little while ago. Looks to me like someone is chancing it a little.......

Do you know what mod is required to the chassis?

BTW - Ferret's Mark 1 already has a 180 BHP Rover engine. He also owns an Atom MK2 220.

You would need to talk with Z-Cars who did the only conversion I know of.

And original Mk1s came with a 190bhp option from the factory

The chasis wasn't changed other than removing and plating over the old engine mounts and then adding new mounts for the honda unit.  Apparantly very straight forward.

Try two Hayabusa or GSXR 1000 engines, they will probably fit  ;D

It sounds like this project has the green light. Wow all the other cars in the country are going to be 100HP minimum more than mine.
