Self-Cancelling Indicators - a new batch?

Post by Bruce Fielding » Wed Apr 27, 2016 9:15 am

Hi Guys

I've had a couple of requests for more self-cancelling indicators.

If the demand is there, I'll get some more made (minimum order of 10). I guess the price might have risen by inflation, but once I know there's interest, I'll get onto the manufacturers and see what price they'll be. The last lot were £160 per set.

If you've ever driven for miles with your indicators on, then you should consider replacing them with these. I've had mine on my car for almost ten years and they're still going strong.

These are from highly reputable manufacturers Raffenday, who I think still build the loom for the Atom for Ariel, so you know they'll work with the car.

How they work:

Operating Instructions
- For a 10 second indication, push the switch in the desired direction and let go quickly.
- For a 20 second indication push the switch hold for 2 seconds before letting go.
- To cancel the indication push and quickly release the switch in the same direction.
- The direction of indication can be quickly changed from one to the other by simply pressing the switch in the opposite direction for the corresponding length of time.

These work with the braking circuit to remain on when the brake pedal is depressed (for example, if you're waiting at traffic lights).

The switch is high quality black plastic

Installation

They have been designed to be 'plug and play' to install - no special skills required. The connections are really easy and simply replace or piggyback existing connections

The only difference is that there's a small control box within the wiring at the back which can be attached to the car somewhere behind the dash and hidden easily. It also needs to be earthed, but there's an awful lot of places to do that on an Atom!

They come with a 12 month warranty.

OK. So now that we're more than halfway, I'll contact Raffenday on Tuesday and get a price.

There is a different between your instruction and the pic you added.

Bruce, can you ask at Raffenday one question for me, please?

Is there a possibility that they flashing a third function:
1. < 1 sec --> 10 sec. indication
2. > 1 sec < 2 sec --> 30 sec. indication
3. If you hold the switch for more than 2 seconds than the desired direction blinking permanently and stops blinking while you push the switch in the same direction.

The background of my question is that the indicator switch is only legal when the blinking is permanent and now the blinking stops no later than 30 Seconds.

Nope.

They do what they do.

I have lots of things on my car that aren't 100% legal - non E marked lights; no front plate; etc. etc. Many other owners do too.

I have never failed an MOT on indicators in nine years.

I'm not changing the indicators to stay on permanently otherwise they'll be useless for those of us who forget to turn the blinking things off!

However, there's nothing to stop anyone else from creating an alternate set.

If you think like that than you have to stop driving an Atom in Germany. Because the registration there is somehow questionable in the first place.  ;)

Also there is a point in the instruction manual that explains the continous flashing.

What's MOT?
I am asking for a third option and who hold the switch more than 2 sec. should know that the blinking don't getting off.
It was only a inquiry. You say no - OK that's it.

In the past I do the same as you Bruce.
Tuning my bike or car with thinks I want - sh1t happens legal or not.

BUT
now I have an Atom since January 2016 and had driven maybe 500 miles and every time when the unifored guys see me with the Ariel they think they have to stop me and control the car. Image
Always they told me this car is not street legal it's a racing car.

No front plate --> paying 85 Euro
No warning triangle --> paying 10 Euro

The last asshole told me that my horn switch is not legal because there is no horn symbol Imageon the black rubber.  >:D

For each stop they need between 30 min. to 1 1/2 hours to f..ck me. Image
Aren't they crazy?

So at the moment I am only carefully. I hope you understand that.  ^-^

MOT is in a way like TÜV in Germany.

As I wrote before. When you think like that… better leave everything stock!

Those two tickets you got where earned and not the fault of the car.

No problems with my regular police stops.  ;D

Sorry Bruce for hijacking your topic!
