Invent An Acronym...

Post by DFext37 Fielding » Fri Mar 20, 2009 11:45 am

After reading this topic - http://forum.atomclub.com/index.php/top ... msg180284- this got me thinking about how to waste some time.

So invent an acronym, can be about anything as long as it is real and has more than 2 letters.

I will start.

DHL - Dull, Hardly Luxurious.

Even funnier that the responses qualify, but the initial example is an abbreviation, not an acronym.

[quote="Answers.com Business Dictionary"]An acronym is pronounceable, whereas many other abbreviations are not.

This was the distinction I had learned, but I see that many other sources have relaxed the definition.  (I knew one persnickity scholarly type who insisted that an acronym had to be an existing word - that laser, scuba, snafu, etc didn't qualify.)

"Bits Of Engine In Neighbor's Garden" made the rounds a few years ago when Boeing was having some problems.

We were also taught . . . .

"Read over your good books in vain"

and in the early 60s one of my science teachers came out with another one when we had a large group of German exchange students in our class . . . .

"Remember Oh Ye Germans, Britain Is Victorious"

as you can imagine, everyone was stunned into silence and didn't know which way to look.  :o
