any BBcode editors?

Post by bolus » Thu Mar 08, 2007 5:39 am

Anyone know if there is a BBcode editor?  If I wanted to post something like a table you have type out a bunch of code like this:

Code: Select all

[tr=tcat]123[tr=alt2]ABC[tr=alt1]FEWE[tr=alt2]2wddw
I'm curious if there are any WYSIWYG Editors out there.

I found a convertor to convert HTML to BBcode but it didn't work for tables

You could maybe see if basic table code for html could be allowed here by Ross. I used basic table tags (HTML) on my dads PHP_BB based forums. Nothing terrific, could'nt use those junk editors out there that throw a lot of extra tags in there but the basic stuff was ok.

It's not that difficult, just time consuming..

How's this for better spacing?

Give me the list, with headers, comma delimited and I will lay it out.

ie
Name,Atom,Location,Age
Bolus,Brammo MK2 300,Portland OR USA,35
Bruce Fielding,Ariel MK2 220, London UK,278
etc..ect..

I was thinking that I could take over maintaining the list from gage if he wanted and thought the table format would more easily readable.  But I would need too maintain it and doing it by hand sounds like a giant pain.  That's why I was looking for an editor to make the upkeep easier.

I just need a save as -> bbcode in access for excel and I would be golden

Does vBulletin support what you're looking for? I'd gladly chip in to purchase a vBulletin license for AAOC - I like it a lot better than SMF.

Thanks Terry, but we'll be sticking with SMF.

SMF already supports BBCode and I've now also enabled the HTML tag support which now adds support for the following tags (actually scrub that now, adding HTML tag support is just going to cause problems and the number of tags supported doesn't really add any value anyhow).

I think what Bolus was actually after was some other external app which will allow the export of documents in BBCode so that he can then post the code into the his forum post - not a complete new forum (which seems like a bit of an extreme fix to be honest).

Cheers, Ross.

I did this with clever search and replace in Word - was very easy provided you do have the base data available.

The other, even better opion IMHO is Excel:

ABC12
DEF34
GHI56
JKL78
MNO90

Excel sheet for this simple example (2 columns) above attached. Easy to modify and very simple to add other stuff like formattings - just add a column before and after the text and change the concetenation (example provides this for bold). I am sure this can be further automated (time permitting), but I think you should get the idea.

In order for the Excel sheet to work you need to rename its extension to .xls from .doc. The forum unfortunately does not allow to attach Excel documents, so I had to rename the file before uploading.

Ross,  yes, I was looking for an offline editor that would just save the result in BBcode format so I could just copy and paste into a new post.  Klaus made a good suggestion and I'll try that later.  I have the SO# list in an access database so I can probably build a report to add in the code.  I'll have to think about it.

Thanks for the suggestions

Bolus, things seem to work. Just one small note which might make the table easier to read: I just found out that you can center text within a column by adding the code to center around the text in the column. Just look at my example provided below - first line of data centred, second one is standard (i.e. left justified).

Assuming that you have this as a report or an Excel sheet anyway, it should be easy to change.

Best regards,

Klaus

That does look better.  I'll see if I can easily modify the excel table I have

Surely that must a setting somewhere. I am absolutely convinced that Ross is able to easily increase that. Just out of interest what's the number of characters the system complained about?
