Bay Area suggestions?

Post by atomathics » Wed Nov 05, 2008 10:33 pm

Hello -

I'm visiting the Bay Area (San Francisco) for a few weeks and was wondering if anyone's got some suggestions for good drives in the area, or maybe some local get-togethers (something along the lines of Supercar Sunday).  I see there's this "Euro Sunday" event in a week or so, but was wondering if any locals had some other suggestions.

Thanks!

For sure!

You can't really go wrong with HWY 1 either south of SF through Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur or north all the way up to Mendocino. If you're going to be here for a while I would highly recommend renting a house in Sea Ranch/Mendocino for a few days. There are some awesome fairly reasonable vacation rentals with hot tubs and sea views. If your interested in this I have a couple of web sites I can recommend if you want to PM me. Mendocino is  really awesome!

Drives:

The 235 is a really nice drive from 101 to Hwy 1

The 25 then 198 out side Holister is pretty spectacular, takes you by Pinnacles national park. A lot of sports car companies do their photo shoots on this road.

if you're after something closer the I recommend driving up Page Mill road from Palo Alto---->Alpine Rd----->to La Honda---->Sky Line----> Half Moon Bay---> SF up Hwy 1

There's a restaurant in La Honda called Alice's which is a big biker hangout but great for brunch. Also if you want a crazy bar to visit Apple Jacks also in La Honda won't dissappoint. In the same general area there's also the San Gregorio General store which is like an old wildwest saloon/crazy store and they often have music at the weekends

if you like wild life you can drive down Hwy 1 a bit from San Gregorio and see lots of elephant seals at Ana Nuevo

There's also a nice drive across the GG bridge through Sausalito to the John Muir woods if you want to see big trees. There's a great English pub right by Muir Beach called the Pelican Inn. It's THE only pub that comes anywhere near to a real English country pub I've ever seen State Side. They do great food and you can sit by a roaring fire.

If you drive on a bit you get into Point Reyes which has nice beaches and if you make it to the light house at the end you can often see whales ( a little early but you might be lucky). You can pick up a map at the visitors centre

Events:

EuroSunday is in Danville on the 16th. If I can get out of bed on Sunday morning I'll be going if you want to meet up.

There's also the  Good Guys hot rod/custom car show this weekend in Pleasanton:

I'm going on Sun in order to check out custom colours for my atom (not normally into hot rods though).

This is all I can think of off the top of my head but if I think of anything else I'll post it.

Have fun!

Hi, Caroline -

Thanks, those are some great suggestions, and it's a big help!  Looks like I've now got my remaining weekends filled with all those places to drive...

I think I'm going to make it to the Euro Sunday thing, so I'll PM you shortly before.  Any idea how long it would take to drive from the city to the event?  It's in Danville, right?

Thanks,

One warning Atomathics.  If you see a tall redhead on the side of the road, trying to flag you down... don't stop.  That's Caroline.  She has an atom on order, and now that she's told you what roads to drive on (out in the middle of nowhere, where there will be no witnesses), she'll know where to find you and probably take your car.

She's been very patient so far waiting for her car, but I think she's gonna take matters into her own hands at this point.
