How many tracks?

Post by John Lloyd » Tue Nov 21, 2006 6:36 pm

I know you'll have more in one state than we have in the whole of the UK!! But how many tracks are there for you to track cars on.  (In the UK the figure is about 19 plus a number of airfields and small tracks.)

I'm in northern California, and we have 3 "real" tracks - Laguna Seca (in Monterey), Infineon (aka Sears Point, in Sonoma), and Thunderhill (closest to Brammo).  Southern Calif has their own collection of tracks as well, and there's also Buttonwillow located in central Calif.

It depends on the state. Aside from the differences in land area in different states, some states seem to think that tracks are undesirable. You can use the track locator at http://www.chasinracin.com/track-locator/ to get a general feel, but note that it lists decommissioned tracks for historical purposes.

In addition to these full-time tracks, there are a number of locations which see semi-regular duty as autocross locations. These are often parking lots at sports stadiums, etc.

Depends on what you consider "Tracks" I'm don't counting Dirt tracks, Ovals or Drag Strips or tem, proary AutoX stuff, I'm talking real, paved permanent road courses. with that criteria I'd bet you the UK beats us. Most states likely have LESS of those tracks than the UK.  The car culture/establishment over there is much more accepting of motorsport than here in the States.

This site will give you a pretty good idea of what's going on across the US.

In AZ we have several - Phoenix International, and Firebird. There is even a local guy that has his own private track that is supposed to be incredible. Arizona Motorsports Park, it's a 2.25 mile track. http://www.arizonamotorsportspark.com/  They had some races there - the neighbors complained - oops we forgot a permit, now it's a "hobby track".

Those are road racing tracks, AZ also has more than 25 oval racing tracks, about half are hard packed dirt for some pretty wild racing.

Maybe it's on another thread, but what groups allow Atoms to drive on the track with them. The track chair of my home club (Riesentöter Porsche Club of America) said I could drive an Atom with them, but the difference in size is rather great. Does BMW CCA, Chin, Trackmasters, Ferrari Club and others allow Atoms on the track with them?

fixed the link.  The track layout looks pretty cool.  They should be open at the end of the summer.

I've run with NASA, Trackmasters, and NCRC/NorCal Racing so far.  Everyone loves the Atom.  Participation has never been denied.
