Long Beach Grand Prix, 15,16,17th of April 2010

Post by CalScot » Mon Feb 14, 2011 7:46 pm

There are plans afoot for a fun weekend at this years Long Beach GP  :)

Last year, the local Atom owners showed up and we got some pretty cool parking right on trackside in Shoreline Village. (This year, I think I can stil get those parking spots again if anybody wants them)

I am working the GP this year as a SCCA volunteer track worker. I managed to get a pretty good gig as a Paramedic Escort. All ambulances that roll out on a live track to a crashed race car needs to be escorted/accompanied by an SCCA member with a competition license that knows the track rules under a red or yellow flag situation. Being a certified medic helped land the job which is pretty covetted so I am told. The main thing to me is that I only work a few hours per day, get free passes and I get to bring in my motorhome for the weekend in the main paddock area.

This means party central  ;D

The motorhome is already booked up for overnight sleeping with our local Atom owners but there might be some floorspace left for a lucky few if somebody bails out. The motorhome is pretty big with well over 400sqft when opened up so it can accomodate a pretty big party inside. We will have the Chineese F1 GP live on the satelite big screen inside and on the outside as well. With Indy Cars and ALMS race cars just a few yards away on track, it should be a testosterone, alcohol and race fuel filled weekend 8)

Of course, the reason for the post is to invite any of you Atom nuts to come and hang with the SoCal Atom guys on what should be a fun weekend.

I emailed John a few weeks back to see what the schedule was. I was trying to see about hooking up with you lot. Said he was still looking at racing and not sure about coming. That and some other pish!
If your in LA that weekend, you are welcome with us at the GP. I still might see if I can tag along on some of your trip in my Atom, and if not you can always hang out in SoCal afterwards.

CalScott, you know I'll be down.  If it's half as much fun as last year, then we'll be having a hell of a weekend!  Plus I think I can bring a bigger bar this time...

Hedge, the LBGP is a blast of a weekend.  Just like all that Euro F1 stuff you have, but you'll actually be able to see the event because we have real sunshine! <g>

Well, it’s the week of the GP  :)

All is on track so to speak as discussed earlier. My gig on the ambulance is secured and I am booked for work. Still no idea of my actual schedule till I show up for training.

I plan on being at the track, parked and settled by Thursday day morning at the latest. Most likely, I will be there Wednesday night to secure the best parking spot. They moved the RV parking to a closed off section of Ocean Blvd. Very close to the track but not in it. I’m told it’s about 500yards from the north end of the track.

I’d like to once again extend an invitation to all our Atom owners to join in the fun and join our group this weekend. If there’s room in the RV, you can sleep on the floor. I reckon there’s enough room for another 2-3 people on a floor mattress on Saturday night. The other nights are pretty open for a place to sleep and of course there's enough room to hold all our Atom owners for food, drink and socializing.

The downtown Long Beach area on GP weekend is really a great party scene with way more great pubs and bars than you can visit in one weekend. Normally you need a hotel or to be local to really get the whole party experience. I’m probably more excited about the racing though. As some of you know, I signed up with PR1 Motorsports running the F2000 this year. PR1 are running an LMPC car in this years ALMS race. I get to hang out with the team when I’m not in the ambulance.  I also get our group behind the scenes and a close up look at the team and the car. All in, it's a unique opportunity to get in behind the workings and see the GP from a place few do.

Hope you can join in and let’s pray for nice weather.

Should we bring our Atoms & do we have some sort of parking arrangments, or is this a "bodies only" thing?  I'd love to have an Atom gathering, but don't want to risk parking it somewhere unsupervised.

Spaz,
I have no idea if I can scam some safe parking near the RV or not. I could try to get the same place as last year but it's on the opposite side of the track from where the RV is.
I will know more by tomorrow so I will update you. I'm thinking it's probably going to be best to bring a regular car that nobody wants to mess with and you can enjoy the event more. Last year it was cool to drive in & out as an Atom convoy but we were worried about the cars all the time and folk were jumping inside and taking pictures of themselves etc.

Gonna bring my daily, no point bringing anything else...

Are our resident lunatic and his 'friend'  ;D Hedge coming along to this?  I know they're over there - sounds like it's one not to be missed?

I'll be getting wet at Prescott Hill Climb instead.  Then getting wet at Silverstone  ;D

I know the pair are in LA on Friday night, so I'm hoping they make it along for at least a day on Saturday. I had a few text messages with John. Sounds like they are having fun at least. They drove out to Flagstaff, AZ on Sunday. I probably passed them on route as I was with the family at the Grand Canyon and drove home the same way. Northern AZ had about two feet of snow and I got snowed in at the Grand Canyon with HWY 40 almost closed down near Kingman late Saturday night. Probably not the weather they expected of the "sunny" South West in April.
