Guess I'm used to bus terminology where there is no driver/passenger left/right so in the US curbside = passenger/right hand etc etc..

Especially when you start talking about the left side of the right hand shaft on the right hand of the passenger side of the north bound train from Chicago traveling at 82 mph with a headwind of 10 knots...

It's no different to Port and Starboard...

In the UK we use Nearside and Offside for cars - nearside being the side nearest the pavement (or kerb) or left side from the driver's perspective.

We also shorten it to initials so, for example the UK drivers' side rear wheel is known as the OSR wheel.

Oh, and the protective rubber is called a boot, apparently (I had mine replaced on Friday). This is not the same as a trunk...!

I wouldn't call it a bushing and neither would I call it a boot. I would be surprised if it's not listed as a SEAL in a parts catalog. And I'd get one on there soon as it looks like it keeps water and dirt out of the transmission.

"bushing" sounds like I know what I'm talking about, "rubber thingamajig" doesnt.  So that is why I said bushing :)

Not sure if the franger is necessary as it only covering a sealed bearing on the outboard pillow bearing of the extension shaft. The trans has oil seals (both sides) to keep the invading debris out and trans oil in.

Although not a bad idea, my car did not arrive with one in it's original state.

Bolus, does the jimmy hat rotate with the shaft or is it stationary with the pillow block?

I would call it a boot, certainly not a bushing and possibly a seal ;)

This is from a 2005 ION factory service manual, but it doesn't list the seal part number anywhere.

Shows it here on the axle (as represented by 1), and not attached to the pillow block.
