Wilwood 6-piston upgrade.

Post by nickpoore » Mon Apr 20, 2009 6:20 pm

I have found out that Wilwood have released an upgraded 6-piston-caliper that bolts into the same location, mounting brackets as the current one.

It's called the BILLET DYNAPRO 6 LUG MOUNT CALIPER, and is on page 34 of their catalog here:
http://catalogs.wilwood.com/2008_Tech_Catalog.pdf

"DP6 calipers offer the performance advantages of a larger pad and a six piston differential bore configuration, with complete bolt-on interchange ability to the four piston 5.25" lug mount DynaPro models, and the long standing Dynalite caliper series."

The replacement part numbers are:
120-10134 right
120-10135 left

These new calipers cost about $280 each.

They use 6712 type pads...

http://catalogs.wilwood.com/_pdf/_pads/ ... atalog.pdf
Page 22 shows the pad options.
Compound: Axle Set Part No.
A: 15A-10724K
B: 15B-10725K
H: 15H-10726K
BP-10: 150-10006K
BP-20: 150-10007K

The BP-20 pads cost arout $90 a pair.
The BP-20 compound is what Brammo originall put on the car, and it has worked well for me.

So, these calipers mount to the same brackets, and use the same 11" rotors.
They also use the same master cylender, so they truly are a bolt-on replacement.

The pads go from 2.1 to 2.4 CU IN.

I'm not sure if this is worth it or not, but will certainly give them a try.

I thought I saw a Mercedes with twin calipers on the front wheel once, but can no longer find photos.  Enjoy these instead:

yes but you had to throw it away when the pads wore out.

As you have headed down that road, if it were me and I still owned a car with a set of wilwoods on it I'd be thinking more of a chubby between a nice set of chesticle's (if the subject ever came up)... :)

The current 2009 SL65 AMG black looks like it's back to using a 6 piston caliper. Evidently it didn't work so good in the '08 model. Still those things were MASSIVE!

Actually, the SL65 never got any half-wheel calipers.  The closest it got was the 8-piston Brembo monsters that were also seen on the other 65's as well as some 55's and 63's.  From MY2007 onward, it gets a variation of the 6-piston calipers first seen on the CLK63 Black Series (the SL65 Black also gets 6-pots).  The new title holder for Most Monstrous Mercedes Caliper goes to the current-generation S63, S65, CL63 and CL65, which have twin piston floating calipers in front on 390mm rotors:

The move from fixed to floating calipers was most likely done to make it easier to fit wheels around those beasts.  There is a part drawing in the Mercedes parts catalog under the S-class for dual calipers at opposite sides of the rotor, but I haven't yet been able to figure out which S class gets the extra oomph.

Through the magic of forums that date back to before Y2K, I have found the kit I originally thought of.  It's not OEM, instead it's manufactured by a company called WP (Winner Power) in Taiwan, and is available for the M3 and the 350Z:

They also make their own 12-pot monster:

More information is available at their website: http://www.winnerpower.com.tw/English/W ... ducts.html

Given that the setup for the twin 6-pots is so simple, they probably wouldn't mind making a twin 12-pot setup if you asked.

To round out my post count for the evening, I have finally found out that the current-model M-B S600 Guard (the armored one) gets dual armored calipers in the front.  I wonder if the hydraulic systems are also fully redundant.
