So, what Transmition Fluid should I use.

The AA manual says : Saturn Manual Transmission Lubricant.  (The use of standard GL-4 lubricant is not recommended.)

Of course, the Saturn dealership has no idea what that is.
In searching the Cobalt forums, they talk about non-LSD, vs LSD, and of course, is a general shouting match on which oil to use.

So, what oil should I use.
Part numbers would be appreciated.
Web links would be even more appreciated.

To give some background info to the other replies that list the part number: Saturn considers that fluid to be a "lifetime fill". Therefore, they don't stock the quart bottles to sell to customers, and the parts counter guy probably hasn't heard of it. Back in the shop area where they actually work on cars, there's a 55 gallon drum of the stuff which is used when the techs have to pull a transmission apart or something else that requires draining it. But the parts guy can't sell you any out of the barrel.

Got my Tranny Fluid.

Local GM dealership did not have it, but was kind enough to refer me to one that did, and it was on my way to a customer today.

I even got a free box!

GM Service Department wants $99 to do the work.
JiffyLube wants $40.

what work are you doing?  just putting in new tranny fluid?  Boy that would take you 5 minutes and you wouldn't need to even jack up the car.

You would need a pan, old milk jug (to recycle) allen wrench and a funnel.  Remove the 2 bolts, replace and refill.  Dont let Jiffy lube do it, they'll drain your engine oil and add extra coolant

Fill to about one inch under the filler hole according to the Brammo manual.

I'm assuming that the "filler hole" is the top one.

How do I tell when the fluid is "one inch" lower than the hole?
(I'm sure there's a dipstick involved somehow.)

I think you use your best judgement, you dipstick might be your finger

yeah just use your finger or I used a zip tie and bent it in there and made a judgement.  The fluid can irritate the skin so wash your hands well or use gloves.  this is not as crucial as the oil level in the engine.

How about simply putting back the same volume as you measure having taken out?
