I second that or even an old wind-up alarm clock as the gears can be small in diameter but wider across the load bearing surface of the tooth. This will be important when meshing with the rack. Too thin and it will eventually act as a saw blade. You might also look at some of the gearing from electric slot cars.

y not do a servo driven steering rack
you can pick up a cheap digital proportional steering rc car and tear it appart
or you can order specific parts, if you are looking for making the entire thing rc

if not, you can pick up a very cheap mechanical skeleton watch (by a vender such as IK Couloring) and break it appart
then use the many gears in it

I decided not to make it an RC car since the parts are going to be pretty fragile when done.  just going for  a model.  I was hoping to make the steering wheel work

my car isnt registered anymore either.  need to try and pass emission testing next spring
