Fender Clearance Measurement?

Post by Karl » Tue Nov 28, 2006 2:16 am

This is a favor I'm asking of any existing Brammo Atom owners... could you measure the approximate distance between the surface of  the rear tire and the closest corresponding point on the rear fender?  I'm trying to ascertain if a 225/45/17 (rather than a 225/45/16, a difference in overall radius of half an inch) will fit.  Please also specify your tire size.  You don't have to break out the calipers for this one, I'd just like to know it to the nearest few mm.  Thanks!

It varies a little since the fender is not perfectly square on my car but the sides are the closest at just over 1/2 an inch on average and then one spot up front is 1/4 inch.  This is the 225/45/16 AVS ES100

My car is fitted with 215/45/r17's on the rear. Clearance is less than 1/2" all around and less than 1/4" in a couple of places. Fender mounts are slotted and allow some adjustment, but mine are pretty close to maxed out.

For those w/ 15" front and 16" rear wheels.
The rear Es100s in the 225/45 16 are :
8.9" total width
8.7" tread width
24  diameter

The rear A048 225/45 16 are:
8.9"
8.8"
23.8"

The front Es100s 205/15s are:
8.2"
7.5"
23.2"

The front A048 in 205/15s are:
8.5"
8.2"
23"

Lastly, the odd ball.. there is a 225 50 15 A048 thats:
9.3"
9.1"
23.7"
Question is...can the front take the extra .8" over in width (thats .4 each side of centerline), and the extra .5 ( .25 additional top clearance) over the 100's height.  The pics are of the rear correct?

To those with Atoms.. how hard would it be to modify the fenders/ fender brackets for added clearance?  We can fab/web etc very well here.. and hidden gotchas that would stop us..or Brammo for that matter?

As long as the radius doesn't stray so much that the arc of the fender looks out of proportion, you could adjust for diameter fairly easily. The fender mount plates are slotted already and adding a bit more to the plates (or relocating them with respect to the struts) would be possible. The result would be a fender having about the same range of adjustment (limited bu the mounting area) but at a larger opening. The width is another story though, as this is determined by the mold. That would have to be a Brammo thing unless someone wants to spend some big bucks and hope for a return. Technically, one could extend the width of the standard fenders like a custom chopper builder does, but to get the strength and maintain the weight, building new ones would be far better. I know that Brammo is considering these types of issues with larger tires, but also that they must work within their licensing agreements, and of course the need to deliver more cars.
