Toyo proxes R888: 235s or 225s?

Post by toby » Wed Sep 29, 2010 8:13 am

Hi all,

I'd like to get a set of Toyo Proxes for the rear. I'm looking at the following two sizes:

tire size                             rim width    height tread  weight
225/50ZR15 91W  160680  6.0-7.0-8.0  23.7  9.1  6  21.8
235/50ZR15 94W  162860  6.5-7.5-8.5  24.2  9.6  6  24.4

Has anyone had experience fitting the 235/50r15s under stock rear fenders?

Thanks!

Hmm... still no response from anyone? What I'd really like to know is what is the tallest and widest tire anyone has fit under the stock rear fenders.

Well, I've gone ahead and ordered 2 235/50r15 toyo R888 tires. Hope they will fit. Shipping is nearly as much as the cost of the tires!

The 225/50r15 Yokohama Advan A048 tires that are on the back right now have nearly 1" of clearance to the fender, and they are 23.7" in diameter with 9.1" tread width.
The 235/50r15 Toyou R888 tires I just ordered are specified as 1/2 inch larger diameter (that's only 1/4 inch larger radius, which is what counts for fender clearance) with 1/2 inch wider tread. I know that all tires are different and the math might not work out exactly, but I think there's enough wiggle room that it should work.

Wish me luck! I'll report back once I've gotten them mounted and fit.

Toby

Pretty sure there's few responses cos this subject has been discussed lots already. Maybe do a wee search?

Cheers, Hedge

I don't think 235s will fit, it is very close with my 225s

I read some of the previous threads, but couldn't find anything. I'll go back and look again.
I think most people have A048s in 225/45r16, right? According to Tire Rack, that's 23.8" in diameter and 8.8" wide,

I'm using a 15" rim, so my sizes are a bit different. Looking at the 1" of room all around my A048s, I'm hoping they'll fit. I've ordered now, so we'll have to see.

Waaay back in 2007, Bottoz posted that he was able to fit 225/50r16 tires. I couldn't tell what brand, but I'll assume they were Yokohama Advan A048s. The specs for those are: 9" tread width; 24.9" tall.

The 235/50r15 Toyo R888 tires I'm getting are wider at 9.6" (about 1/4 inch more to either side), but at 24.2", they're nearly 3/4" *smaller* in diameter. I agree that 235/50r16 tires would almost certainly not fit, but in the 15" rim size, the numbers are looking good. Of course, it's all academic until I actually put the tires on the car. Stay tuned.

On a side note, I did some more searching in the archives and haven't found a comprehensive "what tires fit" section. It would be great to have a comprehensive list of what tire brands/sizes people have been able to fit under the stock fenders. Then refer to that topic in the "what you need to know" sticky.

I'm running the Toyo 888 in 245-45-16 on the rear with the TD wheels.  They barely fit under the fenders and are slightly wider than what should be on a rim of this width, but I've gone through 2 sets with no problems so far on both street/track.  You can see what they look like on the car on this page of my website's gallery.

Ah, great. This is exactly what I was hoping for. Confirmed fitment of the same tire model with slightly larger dimensions in both diameter and tread width. Perfect! Thanks, Lane! I can breathe easier now.
