You could do it with a centrifugal supercharger, which is basically a belt driven turbocharger.

That's all an axial flow supercharger is too!

I thought the axial supercharger was a vane design positive displacement unit, like what is used as an A/C compressor nowadays.

Max, what I was getting at is that they are both just ways of compressing the air flowing into the engine.  Turbochargers are powered by taking energy from the exhaus gasses, superchargers from the engine.  In that sense any kind of supercharger is just a "belt driven" turbo.  I guess that in theory you could make an axial flow turbocharger, although the sheer complexity of getting it to fit in with the rest of the engine would be a challenge.

The only problem with an air to air intercooler on a supercharged roots style car is placement.
You need to work on the air as it leaves the blower, which is bolted to the side of the cyl head. There is no way to place a core in the incoming air charge and also have the core exposed to ambient air for proper heat exchance.
No one has an air to air roots style setup.(that I have ever heard of...)

It doesn't matter what the compressor type is, it's the pipe routing and IC placement that's important.  As you rightly say, you do need to have the IC in direct air flow (or with a suitable duct feeding it), but then balancing that need without convoluted pipework to the inlet manifold, compromising boosted air speed is the issue.  Ultimately, for any car, packaging is the issue.

That is why I believe  water injection could be our holy grail :tu: (and we sure could use one)

Maybe turbocharging is a better way forward for those seeking significant power increases? Less cooling needed and no energy sap.
[/quote]

indeed,  although cooling is just as big an issue as with the SC.....I'm on a rad  twice the Atoms size, and it's good for about a 14PSi on a hot day.... that's not even talking about the massive Inter-cooler in the scoop.

Also, turbocharging a track car, has a hole set of other issues with regards to power curve shape and power control.  for sure the way to go for a road car,  nice and nimble down low, very predictable in town, nice and quite,  But then,  if mister Lambo-driver need to get put back in his cage.... it's all there, and lots of it.

Darth's progress so far.  He is installing the tank behind his seat

its hard to tell in the pics, but the cap is just below the seat level, so you don't even see it unless you're at the right angle.

Tomorrow the pump, pressure switch, and relay install.  Then I just have to run the power, ground and switched power!

how are you guys going to control the amount of water  to enter the engine....  with jets,  like on an oldschool NOZ setup,  or do you have a way to electronically control it, not to different from the way fuel is being metered.

I'm just learning about this stuff but it varies by kit.  The kit I am going with has different sized nozzles for different flow rates and reads the fuel injector duty cycle so it can deliver more water at higher RPMs.  Some water injection kits are fully mappable just like tuning a fuel injected engine.

you might want to look into something we call a "HOP-Switch"  it's a very crude, but rather effective way to have a number of metered injectors (jets)  be supplied with pressure at different MAP values via the old solenoid valve, being switched by the HOP.  The HOP (looks like a oil pressure sender unit) has a little screw on top, with which you can set the Manifold pressure at which it will switch on, so by having say a 3 or 4 stage setup, you can stage it for different pressure levels. ideally you would not want any water to be injected at pressures below 1 ATM. (0 boost)  but  yeah  if it looks at the Inj-Duty, then it's allready better than most....

Some ECU's have what is known as a Micro fuel output.  which in essence is a separate  2D map that can control exacly that...

When does the driving begin...or dyno testing?
