UK owners... volunteer your transmission codes!

Post by Karl » Tue Jan 09, 2007 5:30 am

I need some help from our brethren on the other side of the pond, to satisfy a curiosity.

If you have an Atom powered by a Honda K20A, I'd like to know what your transaxle code is.  You should be able to clearly see a white label with a bar code on the top side of the transaxle, with an ID number that reads:

XXXX-YYYYYYY

Where X are alphanumeric and Y are numeric digits.  The XXXX is the code, and YYYYYYY is the serial number.  Some examples of codes are: Y2M3, NPR3, RBC3, etc.

So, what's yours?

I am trying to figure out if the Brammo Honda Atoms share the same transaxle as the UK ones.  So far I've been able to establish that we have a "mystery" gearbox that doesn't seem to come directly from any one car.  I'd like to know if the UK transaxles are directly lifted from vehicles, or if they're "special" too.

What is your transaxle code and can you decipher them if you have a couple of different ones?

Mine is NTS3.  It's not a matter of deciphering, rather, there are a few known codes that correspond to various Honda vehicles, for which in turn the gear ratios are known.  If the UK gearbox comes straight from a Honda car, the code will tell us right away what the ratios are.  Otherwise, I'll include the unknown codes in my quest to find the true ratios.

Not much of a quest. One phone call would sort it...

It's on a par with a quest to go and get 20 Rothmans.

The NPR3 gearbox is straight from the JDM Civic Type R and features an LSD, with the following gearbox ratios:

1st - 3.266
2nd - 2.13
3rd - 1.517
4th - 1.212
5th - 0.972
6th - 0.78
Reverse - 3.583
Final Drive - 4.764

Anyone have a different code?

For those not into Month Python:

Mitzi This is Prince Walter.
Otto Eeeugh!  Is he in the book?
Mitzi Yes.
Otto Oh, hello Walter.
Walter (Michael)  Prince Walter.
Otto [sarcastically] Oh, so sorry!  So you want to marry my daughter,
do you?
Walter Perhaps.
Mitzi Oh, say you do, and wing me such joy as I have never tasted
before.
Walter Yeah, all right.
Otto All right.  First I must set you a task, so you may prove
yourself worthy of my daughter's hand in marriage.
Walter Why?
Otto Because she's a f[bleep]ing princess, that's why!  You must go
tomorrow morning to the highest part of the castle... [Syllabub
hits him.]  You must go, um... [Syllabub threatens him again] er,
go down to the shops and get me twenty Rothmans.
Walter What, now?
Otto Tomorrow morning.

Storyteller  And so, early next morning, all the happy villagers were
gathered to watch Prince Walter set off on his quest.
[From a dais outside the castle, on which King, Queen and
Princess sit, Prince Walter walks, holding a banknote, past the
villagers down the street to the tobacconist.  He emerges holding
a packet of cigarettes aloft triumphantly to cheers from the
crowd.  He walks back up the street to the dais, on which Mitzi
is jumping up and down excitedly.]
Walter Here are your fags.  [He tosses them to Otto.]
Otto [grudgingly]  Thank you, Walter.
Walter Prince Walter!
Syllabub  Well done, Prince Walter.

Why do some people like to know π to 10 decimal places?
Why do some people remember Monty Python skits?
Maybe the answer is, "Because."

When there's such contention about which engine is better (in the USA) and the gear ratios are overlooked, it's a significant oversight.  Personally I like to know as much about my cars as I can.  It's part of the appreciation of the Atom and the small but important differences.

I think that the difference is that you can argue (and I would) against disclosing too much personal details on a public forum, (would you respond with details if I posted a "how much do you earn thread?)

whereas I can't think of any good arguments against learning comedy sketches verbatim  ;D

Hey! I'm not THAT sad... I cheated with the MP quote!

Although I do know the 'four candles' sketch pretty much off by heart...

I would be surprised that serial number on your transaxle can really be traced back to the owner of the car if that's what you mean, but I definately understand your concern.  I won't tell you my home address, phone number, my Atom's VIN or how much I earn annually.  But the serial number is not important with regard to the ratios and differential type IMO.  Just the first four alpha numeric digits that designates the type of gearbox.

I imagine that All EU Atom 2s have a stamp on the engine block that reads, "K20A" and that is does not pose any risk to the owner by disclosing personal information.  The 4-character gearbox designation is the same.  Posting the gearbox code is no worse than telling people you have an Atom 300.

As far as Monty Python skits.  I have few of them memorized myself, I was just pointing out that curiosity does not have to be rational, there might be no "why."  I was not criticising.

Has to be one of the funniest 'sketches' I've ever seen.
