Pulled by the police.

Post by Rob Evans » Sun Oct 01, 2006 4:33 pm

Only 8 days into ownership and I was stopped by the police last night.
It turns out that both my rear lights are not working.  ::)
Since the brake lights ar OK I'm assuming the problem is fuse. Can anyone point me in the direction of the fuse I need to check, I've looked at the 'Fuesbox guide' on the site but that hasn't helped me.

There's some silliness with the bulb holders. On mine, after some road vibration the light will go out. After removing the lens and fiddling with the bulb, it works. After tightening the lens screws fully, it goes out again, but backing off the screws 1/4 turn or so makes it light back up. When I get some time i'll do a complete disassembly of the indicator and see what's going on.

Cheers guys.

I've now had a chance to tinker in the cold light of day and the problem is both rear light bulbs blown.
I assume I can get replacements at Halfords or the like, but is the cause liekly to be an incorrect fuse and if so where can I locate it and what amp should it ideally be?

As Terry said there are some issues with the bulb seats. My right rear brake/side light kept going out. It always came back on if I pushed the bulb in a certain direction (eleven o'clock as you look at it). I fixed it by adding some heat resistant trim repair from Halfords. Cut it into small strips, build up a layer of about 7mm, stick it to the bulb holder wall at about 5 o'clock and it acts on the bulb, pushing it ever so slightly in the correct direction. All fixed. It's not ideal but it will keep Plod off.

New minor problem...

..the left rear lighting 'pod' if you look at the car from behind, seems to have become distorted so it is not covering the wires behind the bulb holders. It's still securely allen bolted back and front, and the screw nearest the wheel is still in place, but the pod no longer fits properly. I guess I'll just have to tape it up to provide minimal waterproofing.

To be honest Rob, even if the pod fits correctly water still gets in.

These covers have been subject of much discussion on the forum and I'd say you're lucky you still have them :)

Tape up or tie-wrap both of them or they'll just end up at the side of the road somewhere.

Mine are like that, too... and I leave it parked outside in thunderstoprms and drive in driving rain... so far, so good...

Has everyone now araldited metal washers to the 'madonna moldings' at either side of the hole that the bolt goes through? If you haven't, you should...

I've two new covers to go on my Atom. I'm going to strengthen them by painting them inside with fibreglass resin and I'll also araldite some washers on.

I wonder how long they'll last :)  ???

Just take the bolts out, and put a heavy-duty cable tie right round it. Works a treat.

As a 'Newbie' owner I guess I'll have to nose around others' cars tomorrow.

Thanks to all.
