Steering upgrade, Atom 3-300

Post by K20A2 » Tue Jun 23, 2015 12:21 pm

Hello,

I read in a thread, that the steering upgrade contains a new quick release boss and steering column bushes.

At present I have the quick release steering wheel with the yellow boss, like below:
http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/steering-wheel-bosses-accessories/demon-tweeks-quick-release-weld-on-formula-boss

Based on the construction it is probably not avoidable, that there is some play in the connection.

What would be the improvement of the steering upgrade?
Is the new boss a different construction, that has less or even no play?

Thanks and regards

It makes a lot of difference - goodness only knows what they have done to make it better - to my eye it didn't look a lot different but the car fees far more stable on the road - weird but well worth the money

Thanks Ian.

So the boss still looks the same or at least similar to the old one?

My personal experience/opinion is that the steering geometry mod makes a massive difference, 100% worth it as it transforms the feel of the front end. However, I'm not sold on the new quick release boss. My original boss developed play and I upgraded to the newer version, but it wasn't long before there was play in that too. I've kept both bosses, but "downgraded" to a non removable wheel set up, feels much, much better but obviously not as convenient being unable to quickly take the wheel off/on.

I also have some play in my quick release steering wheel boss (2013 3.5 model) and am also considering a downgrade to a fixed wheel as I never have a need to remove it. I currently have 2 fat tie wraps around the boss to prevent anyone else from removing it.
Was your downgrade from Ariel or demon tweaks?

From Ariel; I bought the steering column section so there is no boss at all, it bolts directly to the wheel and the other end connects to the CV joint (if I recall correctly). No play at all now, would never go back to a quick release boss.

I think Toilet Duck is right about the geometry setting up the front end is very important (steering) alter the rack height or space the rod ends so there is no bump steer if the track goes in when suspension compressed makes a very darty dangerous car track going out not as dangerous ideally no bump steer

So the steering upgrade probably contains more than I already listed?

My understanding ..

Not everyone needs new bushes - depends on how worn they are.
Some cars don't have the quick release steering wheel option ..

The rest of the mod involves realigning/locating the steering rack with shims where required and aligning the universal joints on the steering column splines to optimise the geometry and minimise lost motion.

It's also possible to adjust the rack and pinion gears to minimise lost motion.

Well worth having done !
