I'm using the same size rears, and my fenders fit.  But mine's a UK Atom.  I'm not sure that the 17's are better than 16" rears, and might be worse.

I agree with you. I think the 16" wheels/tire combo is a lot better due to the side wall size and stiffness of the tire. But that was the  only wheel that was readily available at the time. Hoosier does not make tires for the stock 16" wheel size of the atom so we ordered this 17" team dynamics until we order and receive the volks we plan to run on the atoms.

Bottoz mentioned that 225/50/16 will fit under the fenders, and Hoosier makes both the A6 and R6 in this size.

The stock tire on the atom is 225/45/16. We ordered the 225/50/16 on Hoosier and they do not fit under the fenders. They are taller and even though they a re both 225 the Hoosiers are a bit wider than the stock BF's tires.

Yeah, you need to do a little surgery on the mounts - Sorry, I don't have any before pictures

I've run the Hoosiers and Hankooks with no problems once the mounting brackets were extended. We did two sets so far, one for my car and another for Sharpatom2's Brammo 300.

In our case our cars have the fiberglass fenders. We opted to fabricate wider ones for the rear to compensate for the wider tire.

Any photos or other info about your wider fenders?

Here are a few pics of the fenders. We still need to finish the brackets. This is the new fender over the Hoosier tire and over the stock BF tire. The one with the green line in the center is the mold we are using to lay the fiberglass. The green line is the amount extended on the fender
