This bit:
But a turbo comes with caveats. Lag. Noise. The Atom doesn’t quite manage to give both a full swerve. Lag is there at low revs, and although negligible above 4,000rpm it never has the raw urgency, the instant savage kick that the old supercharged motor had. Nor does it have the same buzzsaw wail that made the Atom 3 sound like a manic motorised mosquito. Now it’s Darth Vader on laughing gas, this frantic gaseous sucking and blowing. It’s good, and you can play tunes, get Darth all riled up and then back him off into a ‘Moon River’ moment, but it’s not stellar.
Is more than a little worrying. And until we get to drive one ourselves its impossible to detect the lag from the passenger seat! :(
Yep turbos will always be different from NA and supercharged.

Modern turbos usually have lots of low down torque with a pretty flat torque virtually to the redline.

I'm a big fan of these type of turbos which in IMHO make this type of car much more driveable. This engine is a real peach - see engineering explained

The downside is usually the sound, turbo lag and off boost behaviour - though the latter two have been largely eliminated.

Fuzzy face is not really a place I'd trust - carperfection gives a much more balanced view

Once Ariel have got more respected reviewers to look at the mk4, I'll think you find that the mk4 is significantly better than the mk3 in all respects.

Looking forward to the 4R!

Thanks for this video link, it was quite informative. I did notice the chap said the K20C1 engine produces 22.8 psi which is about 1.5 bar of boost. I would then expect the stock Atom 4 to produce the same, but I read it produces 1.3 bar. If this is correct, then the fact the 4 has slightly more horse power might mean better inter-cooler and more efficient perhaps. Would love to understand more on this.

Its Jan people! Build time for some lucky individuals.

Anyone going into build in Jan for a spring delivery?

Someone must have a complete spec and paid up to start build! :o

Who's at the top of the list?
Atom 4, Clio v6, & some other cars obviously.

Nick you lucky chap! Congrats mate.

I got a ride out in one last year and I was impressed. The damping really is incredible - just squats and go’s. The looks are also starting to grow on me too. I just can’t get come to terms with the noise. I’ve never been a fan of waste gate hisses, so I think I’m going to stick with the SC on my 3 in the short term. That said, if anyone has a manual 3.5 SC they may want to part with - I could be interested.

Final thing. London dawn raid. Been too long. I’ll get a thread going for those that are interested.

Cheers

Chris.

Yep. The three Cups I've seen have been well molested so anyone wants to sell their mk3.5 NA or SC please PM me - I've cash burning a hole in my pocket!

Yep seen that one as well. The car is in good nick, however according to the factory it’s had a chassis change - I.e. at some point it was an unrecorded Cat S after a major accident. Additionally it’s not got a recognised Indy or factory service history.

It does look very nice from the pictures. They should really let people know about the chassis in the advert. I to would not buy an Atom if it hadn't had a full regular Ariel service. It surprises me at how many of these cars for sale don't have it.
