Atom 2 on Pistonheads' "Spotted"

Nice little piece on this supercharged AA2 for sale: https://www.pistonheads.com/regulars/ph ... tted/39497

"If you've ever seen (or driven) an Ariel Atom at a track day, you'll know just how blindingly quick they are on the asphalt. They're pretty much the closest thing to a thoroughbred racing car you can stick number plates on, after all, with the design comprising little more than a bare skeleton chassis, powertrain and a pair of seats.

That's certainly been the case since the Ariel was launched back in 2000, when it evolved from a Coventry University project to an actual for-sale track car. Today, of course, the segment is more crowded than ever, and the competition more intense than ever - see Caterham 620S and BAC Mono as two compelling alternatives. Yet to many, nothing can match the Atom for its mixture of rawness and open-to-the-elements focus.

This is especially true when you find an Atom with £10k worth of upgrades fitted, like today's Spotted. This 2005 car uses a 310hp supercharged Honda VTEC motor that provides it with 560hp per tonne, so it's presumably not short of eye-watering pace. It also features the optional Ariel aero kit, comprised of front and rear wings.

Add in a set of 200-mile-old Toyo 888Rs and you've got yourself a machine capable of reaching some rather extreme levels of lateral G. Hypercars aside, there isn't much else you can legitimately strap a number plate to and expect to lap much quicker in. Certainly not for the price of high-spec hot hatch.

The current owner has certainly put this to the test, as shown by the pictures of the car at the Nurburgring. Following its stints on circuit it looks to have been well maintained, with upgraded bearings and driveshafts fitted three months ago and a recent oil change in its service history. It's described as being "in perfect condition".

As far as plug and play track cars capable of shaming just about anything on track go, this has to be one of the most exciting options in the classifieds. We can't think of a more thrilling way to part with £34k..."

I had looked at this car as it had ticked a good few spec boxes, but when you consider that a 2010 Atom 3 with 8000 miles and as many toys [Aero incl] sold last week for £33.5 oh and with only two owners as opposed to 6, it makes this Atom 2 less appealing and a little over priced even after a price drop from £35!
Maybe some more close up pictures showing some detail would help show it of better, although i have never found Ebay to be the best platform for selling specialist cars :)

Much better Pistonheads add

I bought the one you are talking about.

There isn’t a lot for sale out there to gauge against so it’s hard to say if mine was under priced or this one over priced. I did look into it though and the factory knew the car and confirmed it as genuine but the latest MOT stating “no odometer” fitted put me off.

Tuscanracer - the Atom 3 in question (if as advertised?) seems to have been considerably under priced for an Atom 3 310 - probably because I suspect that the seller (a garage unused to Atom values?) didn't do nearly enough research and therefore priced it to move quickly as it would have represented substantial capital sum invested in an open car that they may have considered possibly difficult to sell in the depths of winter!

In comparison the Atom 2 is, in my opinion, priced at about the maximum for the model and spec.

Agreed on all points. I believe that the car that Chris bought was serviced by the same garage that sold it, so neither of these cars has a full factory history, which will also affect the values.

Oh and I find that eBay is very effective for selling a car - anyone serious about buying a car would look on eBay and a classified ad is only £17! I do agree that it needs to be on Pistonheads too, as that car is.

This is overpriced by at least £4k for a private sale

Sold mine through a supercar garage, who offered the buyer a warranty. Slightly more miles but only one owner with cpl racing indy service history.

Recent 2010 at a garage went for a similar amountImage
