Good one Tim, that looks a bargain! Steering wheel, handbrake, lights.

Ariel Atom cup has made a re-appearance

https://www.normanspond.com/vehicle-detail/MzAw

Its gained a few thousand miles, but same photos

Last time I looked at this it needed about £5k worth of repairs excluding chassis refurbishment

It's got some factory service history so worth asking Henry at Ariel

The MOT history is interesting. It failed its first MOT (in October 2012) with 2063 miles with some very basic stuff:

Reason(s) for failure
Offside Stop lamp not working (1.2.1b)
Offside Rear position lamp(s) not working (1.1.A.3b)
Nearside Rear Tyre tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm (4.1.E.1)
Offside Rear Tyre tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm (4.1.E.1)
Parking brake not fitted on at least two wheels (3.1.1)
Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive (7.3.D.3)
Parking brake: efficiency below requirements (3.7.C.1b)
Advisory notice item(s)
Nearside Front Tyre worn close to the legal limit (4.1.E.1)
Offside Front Tyre worn close to the legal limit (4.1.E.1)

This includes not having a handbrake, which it still doesn't have. That would suggest either a "friendly" MOT station who ignored this or that the factory MOT it each year (most likely whilst it is being serviced) and fit a handbrake for the MOT. Mine had this arrangement for its first 9 years (at £80 a pop) but I asked the previous owner to have one fitted (permanently) by the factory - it cost £954 inc VAT fitted.

Interestingly it wasn't taken back to be retested in 2012 as the first MOT it passed was in July 2015 at 2679 miles. The MOT from then have all been passed with no problems.

This would strongly suggest that it was a track only car for the first 5.5 years. Given the mileage, probably not an experience day car, but most likely privately owned and not very well looked after, at least for the first 3 years.

This doesn't make it bad car or a bad buy by any means, but this will have a bearing on its value and future desirability.

I looked at WA64HVZ in November 2017 when it was for sale at Auto100 for £36k. The lack of receipts proving the service history put me off initially. I later found out it had been in a big accident but had been repaired properly. Several months later it was passed to another dealer and up for £40k.

I bought a 2011 atom 12 months ago, service history missing.
A quick call to the factory confirmed they’d serviced it several times and Henry kindly emailed proof.

Lack of handbrake which is obviously an mot failure, invalidates your insurance and makes parking up/hill starts interesting.

You just knock off £1k on any negotiation.... ;)

Anyone know this car: WK11 EJZ

By the way, newbie question, but why do some Atoms have the extra chassis bit over the air intake? Is that specifically for track cars?

MOT history is excellent, second hand the windscreen alone is worth £1.5k, the wings another £2k+, so that makes the car £29k without haggling. He's missed the sports exhaust though! Looks like a nice car with good options at a sensible price - I'd just call the factory and see if they have serviced it.

It's not specifically for track cars, but is a compliant roll bar for MSA regulations (ie, racing).
It's also wearing road tyres. There are far better tyres if you intend to put it on track.
Also, that's not a sports exhaust, but the standard exhaust from the model 3 onwards, which is why it's tarnished.
I don't know the car. I'm sure the factory will.

Cheers,
Rob.

You are right it is not a sports exhaust, but it isn't the standard 3 exhaust either as that is what mine has. I think it must be the standard 3.5 exhaust as they have the riveted ends.

It looks like my standard exhaust, so yes, I agree with that.

Looks ok, but the non-adjustable suspension is a bit of a shame imo.

Wings front and rear, roll bar, screen, and side panels, but non-adjustable suspension and no charger.

Slightly un-usual options imo.
