Rusty driveshafts
Rusty driveshafts
Hi team
Looking to give Banshee a little spring clean up.
1st order of the day is the slightly rusty looking driveshafts- everything else still looks nice and black but I cannot have rust.
What is the recommendation for paint? High temp / straight to rust metal paint / something else?
Thanks in advance.
Kai

Re: Rusty driveshafts
Hi Kai,
I rubbed mine down to bare metal, etch primed and sprayed with a good quality satin black paint. I then wrapped them in heavy guage stone chip protection vinyl. No need for HT paint. This was easy as I had them off the car. If I was doing it in situ I'd probably lightly sand and coat with a stone chip paint like hammerite or POR15.

I did mine 2 years ago, light sand in situ and then smooth Hammerite - still look fine

Re: Rusty driveshafts
I think a number of people have done them in situ and, once sanded, Hammerite satin black painted on works great. A bit of 3m tape over that once done and should be good for a while. I need to do mine...need to pull my finger out!

Aarggghhh. My first stone chip!
Thankfully on a black bit (I think it's called the wishbone arm control grommet - you know, where the wheels is screwed on to).
Anywho, is this the stuff you refer to Alex Brandon-Smith: https://www.screwfix.com/p/hammerite-sa ... 50ml/50899
Thankfully it wasn't the frame (this time). Must get round to asking Crewkerne if they do little pots of touch up paint. I still can't find 'Nomad Grey' at Halfords.

Re: Rusty driveshafts
I bet they don't look this bad !
John Lloyd used to be an owner on here (he had the Atom with the full length lady painted on the bonnet) and used to daily drive his car to work come winter, snow, salt more salt etc.
When the car came to be sold, I think the factory replaced everything !

Do you know the age and mileage it took to get into that state?

Re: Rusty driveshafts
Mine got rusty when it lived outdoors for a few years. I found that black smooth hammerite (‘smoothrite’?) works well on the wishbones and pushrods but the driveshafts seem to be made of a different metal, the hammerite didn’t ‘take’ properly and chipped off quite quickly.
