From posts I've read on this subject, I suspect the Atom 3 steering upgrade, the shimming that is mention and the improved handling reported, it's a correction for bump steer. If the workshop you mention "..have the tools and knowledge to build up cars from scratch.." then they should be able to check for, and correct, bump steer.

I purchased this guage from DT to check my Atom 2. It was well within the generally accepted range for bump out with no bump in.

It isnt really obvious to be honest - Its very much fine tuning of everything.
