Dumb Question King- Fat passengers

Post by PhilTimo » Mon Nov 16, 2020 7:23 pm

Some of my mates are rather big chaps in the belly dept.
Is there a limit to weight in the passenger seat? I understand the handling implications, but just thinking about the safe working load for the seats?!

Thanks again in advance

Don't think so.

Siting down, I think you'll be OK.

Having 20 stone of man-muscle standing on a seat on one foot as he tries to get in?

I'd be cautious...

Depends where they stand.

If 20 stone of man-muscle decides to tip-toe on the very lip of the seat, I'd predict a riot.

It's surprising how quickly an over-excited fully grown man tries to launch themselves into the cars. It's certainly the quickest I've seen some of my mates move for quite some time...

If they're that fat you might wish to WD40 the aperture lest they get stuck half-way in

Had a few largish gentlemen (and ladies!!) in my Atom!

I have generally found that they all had very little problem getting in however some have had a real struggle getting themselves back out again - one large lad required help from both sides!

I haven't had any issues with the seat so far.

I took part in a charity day a few years ago, taking passengers out for donations. A very large man wanted a run around Le Mans. Everyone on the pit wall was in hysterics. Every time i buried the throttle his stomach rose a lot towards his chin and every time I slammed on the brakes his belly moved towards his feet. Sometimes some cars are just not suited to very large people. The Atom is certainly one of those cars, not because they dont fit, its just that everyone can see what your fat is doing.

How does that work with the insurance?

Obviously I have a long list of people who want a go in the left hand seat. Could I point them towards a charity beforehand?

Pretty sure at Le Man's you'll be uninsured (on track). Raising money for charity on the UK roads doesn't necessarily invalidate your insurance but I would ask before hand. I do it with the bears and we clear it with insurance and get the passenger(s) to sign a disclaimer.

Beat the fatties with a Nomad. Most of the really overweight ones take one look at the frame and say “errrr, no”. I also have six point harnesses with a limited lap belt length. I have had to say “no” on safety grounds several times. I genuinely think that if it takes you ten minutes to squeeze out of a vehicle then you probably shouldn’t be in it?

I'd agree with this.

Unfortunately, I've seen too many people launch themselves in, and then struggle to get out. The best bit though (for Nomads) is when they put one leg in and then the body - too eager to listen to instructions - and then sit there with a leg hanging out of the car. Does make me giggle...
