I was going to SORN mine over the Winter but I enjoy driving it so much that I think I may just keep it taxed to take advantage of any good days of weather.

That's really good news. Glad to hear that Jon sorted it all - I've only met him once when I came to look at your Atom, but we had a really good chat.
He seemed like a very honest guy, so I am not surprised he looked after you. Glad it's all sorted - hopefully you can can start to enjoy it, weather permitting. I managed a trip out in mine yesterday before the heavens opened!

Cheers,

Tim.

Hi, update for you all i have my car back now ;D ;D ;D much happier now. i have to say thanks to Jon at https://www.jonsealsportscars.com where i bought my atom from was more than helpful with it all.

my atom went in to TDI north on tuesday and they sorted the crank main oil seal, when they looked at it, it seemed to have not been seated in correctly so it was leaking basically, which is very annoying as ariel themselves did this too in july 2016 :( not sure if they can come out on there own?? TDI north also noticed one of my fuel lines was split and saved it to show me which they sorted also thankfully.

Jon paid for all the work doing too, without any hassle or hesitation which im thankful for, think i owe him a beer as Jamie at TDI north said, many people wouldn't have paid or would have tried to get out of it at least.

now to try and clean it and make sure theres no salt on it from the drive home last night haha. any specific areas to make sure i wipe down underneath?

Sorry to hear about this Noel - sounds like bad luck. At least Jon/TDI North will sort it out for you.

There is no remap necessary for the decat. The factory put the cat on mine each year for its MOT and then it's taken off again afterwards. Steve at the factory said it takes 10 minutes to swap it out but it only makes a couple of extra bhp difference apparently. My car hasn't had the 3.5 310 remap either...yet.

Good luck with it.

I'm sure to get the best out of a decat then yes. I'm also reasonably sure (given the price also) Ariel didn't on the 3.5.

Hi all,

Quick update, i had my car in at TDI north on Saturday, i was there for hours, 1 hour looking over my car and the rest just talking, friendly bunch of people i must say. The problem is what i hoped it wouldnt be, the rear crank main oil seal, they have done me a price for engine out, changing the seal and putting the engine and box back in 980 inc VAT, but they said when they take it out and look it might need a new clutch too depending how much oil has got on it too.

I talked to jon (the guy that owns the garage i bought it from) he was nice about it and said its one of those things and told me to book it in and get it done and he will phone them and sort it out, which is a big relief for me.

the seal was done on june 2016 and its gone again, i asked if that normal and they said it can be yes, they said they have seen some last months and some last ten years and its one of those things, they also mentioned that if its not been seated properly (which happens a lot apparently) then it slowly starts to weep again. but they said those seals do go. have you guys had to have this seal done often?

Personally if rear main seal wasn't needed at time of changing clutch - i wouldnt have touched it.
Honda philosophy is - If its not broken - dont fix it.

You'll be fine with TDI
Just hope they dont relieve you of too much ££
Stew.
cheers, she loves been in the garage when im in, think its all the leaves in the corners she can eat haha.
they said they will wipe the clutch down and see how much oil is on it, they said if its a lot then they recommended changing it.

phil4 wrote: Wed Nov 07, 2018 8:22 am The Decat part is a doddle. You just unbolt the cat section and remove. 6 bolts and 5 minutes and it's done.

What you do need though is a replacement catless pipe (aka cat bypass pipe, decat pipe etc). You could either get one made up if you know of a good local fabricator, or Ariel will sell you one (prices was about £135 many moons ago, so should still be around that). Pop that in, 6 bolts and another 5 minutes and you're done.

It's the easiest decat I've ever done on a car.

all in all im happy with the outcome, just having a morning drive to the garage i was like, this car is insane.

Fastlane wrote: Sun Nov 04, 2018 3:39 pm In terms of bonnets and air box covers - the factory will supply you with them (I believe they are around £600?) but they quite often appear on here too for around £250-300 I think. You can also get them wrapped pretty cheaply, as you can with the mudguards etc.
awesome, i will keep my eye out for a them when they come on.
Fastlane wrote: Sun Nov 04, 2018 3:39 pm You will need a front reg. come MOT time, but quite a lot of people, me included, run without one at all other times. Even the stick on ones that the factory use for MOTs are not strictly legal anyway. There are quite a few threads on here about them. The rear plate is 11"x 8" by the way and you will need to make sure the bottom of it has some form of heat reflective tape otherwise the exhaust will melt it.
ordered a new plate that size thanks, think im going to try my luck then and run it without a plate on the front.

AtomMadStew wrote: Mon Nov 05, 2018 8:14 am Id say Rear main crankshaft oil seal behind flywheel - colour of oil and location of oil leak - if it was gearbox oil it would tend to still be clean/have a golden colour. Not very common at all but have had a few type R's with same weeping of oil in that area. Thankfully both atoms that left my garage left in one piece ;)
Our labour rate is £90ph+vat so TDI'S i'd say is quite reasonable.
Stew.
ok thanks for that stew, appreciate it, it goes in on saturday and they said they can diagnose it then and there so i will let you know what they say.
AtomMadStew wrote: Mon Nov 05, 2018 5:41 pm Could be a source if the rear main seal is ok. Who fitted the previous rear main seal? Factory?
yeah stew, it was done at ariel in july 2016 along with a new clutch, which it says wasnt needed but changed while the engine was out.

thanks for the help. i will let you know how i get on, but my wishful thinking of it been a loose bolt looks slim haha.
the dog even loves the car ;)

Yes Smokin.
The one behind the crank pulley/inside the timing chain cover is front (small) & the larger rear one behind flywheel. Not sure if the k20 has a large oil gallery plug/washer behind the flywheel - some Hondas do/some dont..its been so long since i had one out.
Could be a source if the rear main seal is ok. Who fitted the previous rear main seal? Factory?

Stew, so it's the flywheel end that's considered rear? If so, looks like 911tom had that done a couple of years ago.

In regard to the MOT I had two MOTs done on my Atom prior to shipping it to Cyprus and the lack of a front plate was never commented on (or even mentioned!) but I had to fit the Catalyser each time.
