Which Mobil 1 grade for the V8 ?
Which Motul oil grade for the Mugen ?

Just to add that in my experience the grade is another thing which has the biggest effect.  We have messed around with fully synthetics and found that a 0w/40 fully syn caused oil surge/pressure problems when hot, even with a baffled sump.  Switch back to a 10w/40 and the problem goes away, don't ask me why but it does!!

Tom, what would the factory recommend for mainly track use, nobody seems to mention mobil 1 anymore which i always thought was about as good as it gets?
Ariel have always used Magnatec 10w/40 in everything Honda, including Endurance Race Cars, and never had a whiff of a problem.  It never stays in there long enough to get that dirty/break down anyway.  The main enemy of these engines is running them low on oil on track, not the 'quality' of the oil.  And you'd be surprised at how many cars come back here with the oil well below the maximum........or minimum in some cases.

IMO fully synthetic is a waste of money in a production engine designed to do 200,000 miles on semi-syn with no rebuilds which is having oil changes frequently.  The V8, on the other hand, is a different story.  Mobil 1 all the way.....

For the record I would also use fully synthetic in a 'tuned' engine like the Mugen, Mugen recommend Motul now, although they have changed their minds.  Last week Shell Helix Ultra was the only one you could use in their engines ;D ::)

Thanks, ill give it a go. As they do 5ltr bottles it's hardly any more expensive than the Castrel too.

Just found Silkolene PRO S 5w-40 (recently rebranded as Titan Rave Pro S), anyone got any thoughts on it? Is it ok for road use at cold temps etc?
That is a high quality oil, perfect for the job.

Iv done a load of searching on here but its a nightmare searching 'oil' as its just full of adds, so i couldnt find much of use.

Im due to change engine and gearbox oil before the spring, and although most of my miles are on the road (nearly 5000 last year) I plan on spending some time on track, probably around 3-4 trackdays.

The oil i currently use is 4.8ltrs Castrol GTX Magnitec 10w-40 for the engine and 1.8ltrs Castrol SMX-S as recomended.

Is the GTX Mag 10w-40 perfectly acceptable? or is it recomended to use something different? if so whats peoples thoughts? Dito gearbox oil.

Thanks

Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 is fine for road driving and possibly very mild mannered tracking.

If you're using the car on trackdays you'd be better off with an ester based fully synthetic.

I bet oil has been discussed a great deal on here, but as a newbie - Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 is a semi synthetic, would a fully synthetic be better like the Castrol Magnetec 5w-30??  Just asking...

Roll on spring, or failing that, a dry day!
I think it would, however I think the factory recommend 10W-40 Magantec and if it's good enough for them.

Ben

p.s. having said that I would use a full synth in my Atom but Magnatec in my other road cars.

(usually £28.99)

Holy $!@& that normal price is expensive. £28.99 is currently just over NZ$59. Here it sells for about $47, when it's not on special. I've previously paid around $30.

While it's £17.50 I'd stockpile.

It is almost permanently on offer, but agree £17.50 is a good price.  Time to service the Merc I think.
