You can read the accelerator pedal position if that helps. I don't have the ECU pinouts with me (I'm away till the weekend). But there are two sensors in the accelerator - one where voltage increases with pedal travel and one where voltage decreases. The ECU compares the rate of change of the two and drops a P1239 if they don't correlate, so you can't load the sensor with too much impedance.
